I used to be in possession of a mono-speaker television previously belonging to Meme, my father’s mother, and I would leave it on FOX channel 6 Sunday afternoons when I liked to take naps (when I was able to take naps). Movies I can remember keeping me from falling asleep I liked them so were The Outsiders, Crimson Tide, Ghosts of Mississippi (which led me to doing a project on Medgar Evers, who was the man) Crossroads (not the Britney Spears movie but the one with the Karate Kid actor who has to have a guitar battle with one of the devil’s minions)…see, I think I saw The Labyrinth, and The Neverending Story, and Willow, too, and those are great, but what I mean to get at is that sometimes FOX would present a movie that was a peculiar combination of the serious and the extravagant, and my ol’ pal who stopped by for the weekend, Ryan Parks, reminded me of one of those last night.
He was wearing this jacket, a different color than Patrick Swayze’s here, but when I saw this movie I thought Patrick Swayze was all looking so cool and junk in it, and he’s got this jacket with the elbow patches, and I used to think caddyhats were so cool, and I still think beards are pretty cool, but it’s weird because this movie is about a guy who is a drifter, gets run over by a car, that family lets him stay with them, they all bond and junk, just so happens the drifter can grant wishes. To split my thoughts on the matter into three parts:
1. awesome
2. why in the world did I buy into this plotline so easily as a kid
3. i must really, really, very truly, enjoy stories in general
but then I’m all oh yeah, I was obsessed with baseball DUH
